Merry Maids raises $11,000 for CIBC Run for the Cure
In October, Merry Maids of Kingston had a team participate for the first time in the CIBC Run for the Cure. Like many Canadians, breast cancer had touched the lives of many of our team members and customers.
Over the course of our 24 years, we had unfortunately seen the passing of former staff members and beloved clients. In fact, around Christmas 2013, it affected our daily operations when our manager of over 20 years was diagnosed. Over the next 10 months, Kathie took a leave from us and focused her strength on her battle. We were delighted when she was able to return to work in the Fall of 2014. Her experience has helped us all have a better understanding of our clients undergoing similar experiences as well as our friends and relatives that received a breast cancer diagnosis. Kathie also spoke very highly of everyone she encountered along her journey and the services offered to her through the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario.
In August of 2015, a family member of franchise owner Donna was diagnosed. She is 35 years old with no history of breast cancer in the family. Like many people in Donna’s situation, whether it is a friend or family member diagnosed, she felt helpless. She needed something positive to focus on. That’s when she asked the team at Merry Maids of Kingston if they’d be interested in creating a team to participate and raise money for CIBC’s Run for the Cure. The team was enthusiastic about the idea and that’s when our team was formed. The team jumped into action immediately, not only in raising money but recruiting family and friends to join our team.
By race day on October 4, the Merry Maids of Kingston Team had 31 participants. It was a beautiful day and also emotional to see the sea of people, including many survivors as well as babies in strollers and senior members of our community that struggled to walk but were driven by the great cause. For friends, family, those just beginning the battle, those undergoing it, and the beautiful people who have come out on the other side, it was an uplifting day to feel the love and support of all the participants. By the end of October, when fundraising officially wrapped, Merry Maids of Kingston raised $11,030, the third highest fundraising team in Kingston. We couldn’t be more proud of everyone who donated and helped us reach this milestone.
